Working in a virtual setting can make us feel like we’re working alone. It can be isolating, draining, and can have a negative affect on our mental health. A lot of things have changed this past year, but the need for teamwork certainly hasn’t, and here at Highlight, we want to promote all the ways in which teamwork can still happen - even in a virtual setting.
"Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual accomplishments toward organizational objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results." – Andrew Carnegie
It may seem counterintuitive, but scheduling a virtual meeting with your coworkers just to chat is incredibly important in building a team mindset. By getting a chance to connect without the stress of work, even if it’s only for a quick coffee break, your team develops positive associations with each other, and it makes collaborating that much easier. If there’s not the time to devote a whole meeting to a social setting, try starting your meetings with some social time. This establishes a more comfortable environment, and you’ll find that collaboration comes naturally.
As a team lead, make sure that you’re meeting with each team member individually, as well as scheduling group time. Despite our best efforts, sometimes there are conflicts in groups that go unnoticed. By checking in with each member individually, team leads can ensure that everyone is on the same page and completing their portion of the work. This time also allows for team members to express any concerns they may have in a safe space. Team leaders should also take the time to ask for ways in which they can improve. By opening up this channel of honest communication, team members see that you’re there to also be a member of the team, not just its leader.
Finally, showcasing the authentic you is important to bonding with your team, building trust, and establishing deep and meaningful relationships. With the Highlight app, you can share "the story of you" in a dedicated social space for your team. This allows for you to build a foundation of friendship that will lead to smooth collaboration. Overall, we see this contributing to a more positive work environment. Download the Highlight app and see how fun teamwork can be.
